David Zucker's "An American Carol", Or: Attack of the Republicans PDF Print E-mail

David Zucker, who some would hail as the brilliant director of Airplane! and the Naked Gun series, but some of us just find it hard to look past My Boss' Daughter and the last two Scary Movies, is going to destroy his cred further with his latest movie An American Carol, due out October 3rd.

The Christmas Carol send-up tells the story of a liberal filmmaker named Michael Malone, who wants to abolish the Fourth of July, but is visited by three "Spirits of America" who then teaches him the meaning of being a patriot. The film stars outspoken Republicans such as Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer, James Woods, Jon Voight, Gary Coleman (who actually ran for California governor as a Republican), country singer Trace Adkins and Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly. And Leslie Nielsen's in there too, just because he's Zucker's muse.

The trailer was first spotted at, of all things, The O'Reilly Factor. Here's a video:

Bill O'Reilly looks so proud of this movie, doesn't he? Who wants to bet that when the movie bombs, it's because of Hollywood's left-wing Jews?

Let's make this clear... there's nothing wrong with neo-cons making a satire that mocks the left. Maybe it's even due time for it. But this movie looks shitty on the Mesopotamian level. I've got my issues with Michael Moore too, but the whole "Michael Moore hates America" thing is so played out. The only thing Michael Moore hates is not getting attention, and this will only fuel him further. Also: lesbians look like men, are hairy, and against the war. Terrific.

One thing I found funny and lame at the same time, though: pay attention to whose quote it was in the trailer that calls David Zucker a "Master of movie satire."

Great article. I would like to suggest some revisions to some of your older articles:

Sicko, or: let's visit some hospitals of the locals before we praise this for the US

The Inconvenient Truth, or: let's ask the mammoth if cave fire carbon emmissions are responsible for their extinction

W, or: F for whacko bias

If you want to add right-wing to titles, make sure you point out the outright nutjobs on the left.

Perhaps I'm not getting the joke, Mr. Moore, but I don't know what you're saying. I disliked both Sicko and Inconvenient Truth, and pretty much every article I've written about W. I've predicted it to be ridiculous.

And if you really are who you say you are, Mike, I want you to know that I consider you a nutjob.

The three "Spirits of America" then "teaches" him? :pinch:

No wonder the Neo-liberals are so frustrated and lacking in humor. If simple language skills are beyond their grasp, how can they possibly understand America, American Government and/or American history?

Lighten up, sweetie, it's just a comedy. Try to forget that there is always a grain of truth in all good humor.

It's not him - and I think his statement proves it. First of all he gave an alternate title to Sicko - it's his movie, the time for alternate titles has passed.

And if he was gonna post he'd be much clearer and wittier (I'd hope) than the invalid who posted in his name

The trailer is meant to just hit the basic, slapstick humor and doesn’t expose much of the satire in the plot of the film - and yes, the film has a plot. (Not so subtly copied from Dickens, by the way.)

I’ve been following many of the comments all over the web and find it hilarious that the left is so offended. One comment asked if “librul commies” were ever slave owners and why this movie portrayed them as such. The answer is, yes, “libruls” were slave owners in the American past, just as conservatives were. And some would argue that “commies” are slave owners — or at least slave users — by definition.

For those of you so offended that you wish to leave the country on Opening Day (October 3rd), I encourage you to do so. And, please consider staying out of country until the movie’s run is complete, which probably will be sometime in mid-November.

Further protests by ignoring this year’s election would also be appreciated and respected!

erm, Arya, the trailer didn't say those anti-shaving women were lesbians. You did. Go look in the mirror and yell, "Shame on you, you ignorant bigot!" Then call Rosie O'Donnell and tell her how mad you are that her show got cancelled.
