Moros Eros, a band comprised of four members hailing from Marietta, Georgia delves into the Rock-Opera as so many have before, though not many decide on such an undertaking as their debut album. I Saw the Devil last night and now the sun shines bright is Zach Tipton & Co’s attempt at telling a story that is comprised over 10 songs. The quartet is led by Tipton’s Talking Heads / Modest Mouse – esque vocals, while the lyrics and fretwork remain similar to the latter, one of the charming elements of the Talking Heads work is that they are able to be optimistic and quirky while maintaining a monotonous and indifferent sound, Moros Eros maintains a unique and stylized sound but does not achieve their apparent goal, at least, in their single “Today is the Day”. “When I Wake” is surprising and romantic, the quartet shows a softer side and in contrast to their other songs, they are able to show their flexibility in songwriting as well as musicianship. Another notable song is “I saw the Devil Last night”, which suffers a bit from having a multiple personality; while the first and second halves of the song are great, as a whole it just doesn’t work. Last but least is the track “Madness seems so normal” which is another gem. Rather than relying on Tipton’s styling for most of the song, it maintains to be great instrumentally and somewhat light on vocals – uplifting and surreal but keeping their feet on the ground. Moros Eros displays a great ability for songwriting and musical flexibility. At times their CD might seem a bit boring and monotonous, a bit like the duality which is present in nearly all of their songs, but most of the songs are great – in one way or another, which is also the bands biggest downfall. Moros Eros fails to decide on a sound and stick with it becoming somewhat of a jumble in the process. You should have to listen through an entire CD to find three or four great tracks, so you’re better off on iTunes for this release; keep track of Moros Eros – if their sophomore album shapes up and they decide on a sound of their own, they might just be the next big thing.
